HISTORY
Formation of SHIFT Bay Area
We joined together in opposition to Regional Measure 4, a proposed "$20B Billion Affordable Housing Bond" sponsored by the BAHFA subsidiary of the MTC (Metropolitan Transportation Commission - which runs BART and other entities). That "housing bond" - which would have been the largest in U.S. history - was really a series of 7 bonds spanning 53 years and costing $48.3 Billion, while returning only $16 Billion to the 9 Bay Area counties. Not only did that Measure waste over two-thirds of the tax monies on borrowing costs and overhead, it taxed counties that did not need those funds and favored other counties in allocation of funds. [Documents linked below contain more details]. We sued to stop the ballot measure, which was both deceptively worded and lied about the costs (by 36%). In response, embarrassed, the MTC withdrew the measure before the 2024 election.
Following that success, and with awareness that many other transportation and housing taxes, ballot measures, and laws were being promoted by the current bureaucratic establishment, we agreed to reconstitute and continue our efforts to ensure that only sustainable, cost-effective, and well-managed programs are funded.
We comprise Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Libertarians, and Progressives, bonded together by severe concerns over the mismanagement of our critical infrastructure, and the injustices and inequities derived from bad planning and policy.
